What is a Saloon Car?

Saloon cars have a couple of defining features. They have a boot which is separated from the main cabin with a lid that is hinged underneath the rear window. This differs from hatchbacks which have a boot that is connected to the main body of the car and the rear window is situated within the boot lid. Saloons are also referred to as sedans in other countries.

An advantage of this layout is that the main compartment of a saloon is quieter than other vehicle types and tends to be more spacious. Many also prefer the boot shape. A drawback of these cars is that they can be trickier to park and manoeuvre due the fact that the rear window is not where the body ends, and you'll have to account for the additional length of the boot. This can take some getting used to, although a lot of modern saloons have parking sensors to aid the driver.

Many saloons fall into the premium car category, and they have formed the entire original vehicle ranges of high-end manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Although as the market has grown, there is a great selection of more budget-friendly saloons on offer too from brands such as Skoda, Ford, Kia and Volvo.

Saloons come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from compact models like the BMW 3-Series, the Mercedes C-Class and the Jaguar XE, to mid-size models like the BMW 5-Series and the Volvo S90, and large options like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8.
