2022 VW Taigo Gets All Good Features of VW’s Compact Crossovers
When Volkswagen introduced the 2022 Taigo in the summer, we were a little confused about its position in the crowded crossover lineup of Europe. With T-Cross and T-Roc already accessible, we never thought of a gap between the two. Well, there was a room, and VW filled it with the Taigo.
The Taigo was actually long overdue as the automaker previously planned to bring Brazil’s Nivus to Europe. The small crossover was to be built in Spain with, of course, a different name.
Dimensions
The 2022 VW Taigo is 4.26 metres (167.7 inches) long, 1.75 metres (69 in) wide, and 1.49 mm (58.6 in) tall. With these dimensions, it is a little lengthier, slimmer, and lower than the T-Roc and is longer than the T-Cross, irrespective of the standard- or long-wheelbase variant. With a wheelbase of 2,566 mm (101 in), the Taigo is slightly lengthier than the standard T-Cross but smaller than the LWB-spec T-Cross.
Alternatively, whatever wheelbase you select for the T-Roc, all of them are lengthier than the Taigo. Besides different wheelbases, VW also offers T-Roc Convertible in Europe to fill the void created by the discontinued Range Rover Evoque Convertible.

Exterior
Thanks to the coupe-like roofline, the Taigo boasts a more chic appearance. If you have seen the Brazilian-spec Nivus, you will find plenty of similarities. The picture here shows the flagship R-Line that features fake quad exhaust tips at the back.
Interior

The interior, too, gets lots of design cues and features from the Nivus. However, those with a keen eye will notice the Euro-spec small crossover features upmarket climate control settings we find in the facelifted Tiguan and Arteon.
If you have travelled in a T-Cross or a Polo, you will not find any difference because they received the same climate control module in their mid-cycle facelift.
Engine
The new 2022 VW Taigo comes in only an FWD configuration. There will be no TDI mills, so the only options are two petrol engines. The base model is powered by a three-cylinder 1.0-litre mill generating 95 hp (70 kW) or 110 hp (81 kW). Those looking for more power can opt for the four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine good for 150 hp (110 kW). The transmission selection depends on engine you choose – you get a five- or six-speed manual as well as a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Standard Features
A great thing about the 2022 Taigo is the plethora of standard facilities starting from matrix LED headlights, built-in sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, the Digital Cockpit Pro dash panel, and all the way to automated driving (level 2). Furthermore, you can benefit from a 9.2-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, 18-inch wheels, and several driver assistance facilities. With its swoopy roofline, the headroom isn’t that great, but you can still get 440 liters of boot space, which is similar to the boxy T-Cross.
Price
Besides selling the new Taigo in Europe, VW offers it in many other countries, including Turkey and Africa. The entry-level model starts at £22,450, which is about £1,000 higher than the T-Cross. The range-topping R-Line model goes for a steep £29,725.
The 2022 VW Taigo is a solid crossover that could be an excellent alternative for small SUV customers.
