Best-selling cars in the UK Till August 2024
Last year marked a positive turn for the automotive sector, with the UK enjoying its best year for car sales since the pandemic.
Over 1.9 million new cars hit the market – but one model outshone the others. The Ford Puma claimed the title of the best-selling car in the UK in 2023, becoming the first Ford to top the charts since the Ford Fiesta’s 12-year streak ended in 2020.
It overcame fierce competition from the Nissan Qashqai, Vauxhall Corsa, and Volkswagen T-Roc to reach the pinnacle.
Now, eight months into 2024, the Puma continues to lead the pack, sitting at the top of the list ahead of its competitors - but only by a narrow margin. The Kia Sportage and Qashqai are closely pursuing it.
So, what are the top 10 best-sellers in the UK thus far? Check out the year-to-date list below, starting from January 2024, using data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Best-selling cars in the UK in 2024
1. Ford Puma – 38,944 units

Last year's best-seller is maintaining its momentum in 2024. The compact crossover continues to impress both us and new car buyers with its engaging driving dynamics and competitive pricing, along with the sporty Puma STT variant.
While it may not be the Fiesta we all adore, it’s still a capable alternative. It even surpassed the Ford Transit and Transit Custom vans in sales, which is quite an achievement.
The recent update has kept things appealing with a fresh grille and an enhanced infotainment system.
2. Kia Sportage - 37,582 units

The Kia Sportage had a solid year in 2023, finishing fourth in UK sales, and it’s achieving an even stronger performance in 2024, hovering near the top of the rankings.
Consistency is essential for this family SUV, which entered its fifth generation at the end of 2022, boasting an eye-catching design, contemporary powertrains, and great value for money.
3. Nissan Qashqai – 32,923 units

The Nissan Qashqai was the best-selling car in the UK in 2022, then it wrapped up 2023 in second place, and it continues to attract buyers here with its outstanding practicality.
The British-built family crossover's appeal has likely been enhanced by the introduction of electrified powertrains for its third generation.
4. Nissan Juke - 28,727 units

The Nissan Juke remains a favorite among UK consumers, having finished 2023 in eighth place.
This small SUV debuted with a fresh design in 2020, followed by a facelifted version that launched last year, along with hybrid options for the first time.
A significant sales surge in September indicates healthy growth: the Juke has climbed four places in just two months.
5. Volkswagen Golf – 27,454 units

The Volkswagen Golf isn’t as trendy as it once was, but it remains a top choice for drivers looking for a reliable family hatchback or estate.
In fact, it's gradually making its way back up the rankings, now positioned in fifth place. This could be a crucial moment for the Golf, which has just been released in its facelifted 'Mk8.5' version.
The German classic has been refreshed with a comprehensive tech upgrade, a design overhaul, a more powerful GTI, and an extended-range plug-in hybrid, potentially allowing it to climb even higher.
6. Hyundai Tucson - 26,096 units

The Hyundai Tucson is one of the UK’s favorite SUVs, frequently appearing in the top 10 throughout 2023.
It was revamped in 2021 with a striking front end featuring a unique lighting setup. Its plush interior and range of electrified powertrains also appeal to many buyers in the UK.
7. Audi A3 - 24,957 units

The Audi A3 is one of only three cars on this list that isn’t an SUV, which is a bit disappointing. Its popularity remains robust, and it even outsold the Volkswagen Golf, its sibling in the Volkswagen Group, last year.
Updated in 2024, the A3 certainly deserves its place in the top 10, providing a comfortable ride and good body control, plus a luxurious, spacious interior. The fact that it’s also considerably more affordable than the competing Mercedes-Benz A-Class enhances its appeal.
8. Volkswagen Polo - 23,758

Despite its price (and size) rising over the years, the Volkswagen Polo is still an excellent small car. It’s comfortable, refined, well-built, and spacious while also delivering some of the best fuel economy rates in its class.
The latest iteration is the most enjoyable to drive yet and is loaded with technology. But how long will it remain popular? That remains uncertain, so enjoy it while you can before it disappears like the Ford Fiesta.
9. Tesla Model Y - 23,495

The Tesla Model Y is an incredibly popular electric vehicle. It ended 2023 as Europe's best-selling car overall, which is an impressive achievement after such a brief time on the market.
A recent update increased its range (up to 373 miles) while keeping its roomy interior and exceptional performance. However, its ride quality isn’t the best, and its interior design might be a hit or miss, depending on your preference for buttons.
10. MG HS - 23,115

The MG HS provides unbeatable value for money and entered its second generation this year, positioning it for even greater mainstream success in 2024 and beyond.
Available with a petrol engine or a more economical plug-in hybrid, this family crossover comes with excellent standard features, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree parking camera, and smartphone integration.
