Data Shows New Car Buyers Want A Mercedes, While Used Buyers Favour a Ford
It looks like people have a good sense of what they want when it comes to cars. A recent study came out, showing which brands are hot in both the new and used markets.
YouGov’s research, digging into the numbers from their BrandIndex, discovered that Mercedes-Benz sits at the top of the list when folks think about buying a new car. The study checked out what people were saying they’d consider purchasing within the next year, and wouldn’t you know it, 32% had their eyes on a Mercedes—maybe they’re dreaming of that shiny three-pointed star sitting proudly in the driveway.
Right behind Mercedes, Volkswagen snags the second spot. Nearly 29% of future buyers had their minds set on a VW. This isn’t much of a shock, seeing that models like the Golf and T-Roc are two of the UK's top-sellers so far. People seem to really love these reliable ‘people’s cars.’
Coming in third for new cars is BMW. Yep, premium brands clearly have a grip on buyers, and this pattern only deepens with Audi, Tesla, and Porsche all earning spots in the top 10. It’s clear folks are into the luxury feel, at least when it comes to fresh-off-the-lot rides.
On the used car side, Ford comes in strong. A whopping 41% of people planning to buy a second-hand car within a year leaned toward the Blue Oval. They make the UK’s best-seller, the Puma, so it’s no wonder they’re also loved by new car buyers—about 27% are considering Ford for their next ride.
Volkswagen pops up again in second, this time for used cars, with 38% considering them. And Toyota? They grabbed third place, with 38% of buyers looking at used models compared to just 26% for new ones. Quite the gap, huh?
