
Facelifted 2023 Mercedes GLA Comes With Electrified Powertrain Options for All Variants
Mercedes-Benz launched its second-generation GLA as recently as 2020. However, the brand has already introduced a mid-cycle facelift to this compact SUV. The update encompasses not only a revamped exterior but also substantial modifications to its powertrain options, which have now been electrified throughout the entire range. This momentous shift towards electrification is a significant development, as it denotes a concerted effort by Mercedes to align with the current trend of eco-consciousness and sustainability.

The newly revamped GLA may seem like a mere modest upgrade over its predecessor in design. However, a closer inspection reveals a plethora of subtle but significant changes that have been implemented. For starters, the vehicle boasts a novel headlight signature that exudes a refined and elegant aura. The lower bumper has been thoughtfully reshaped, with more body colour incorporated into it, adding a distinct touch of panache to its overall appearance. The wheel arches have been similarly updated and are now finished in a complementary body colour that accentuates the vehicle's sleek lines. The vehicle's rear end remains unaltered, save for a fresh and contemporary rear light display that adds a touch of modernity to its aesthetics. As standard, the GLA rolls on 17-inch wheels, but the brand has provided the option to upgrade to 18 and 20-inch rims for those who wish to make a more prominent statement on the road.

Upon closely examining the interior layout, it becomes apparent that not much has been altered. Standard variants continue to feature a seven-inch instrument cluster, accompanied by a central touchscreen display measuring 10.25 inches. However, for those who crave more cutting-edge technology, the twin 10.25-inch screens remain an alluring optional extra. As for the steering wheel, the latest incarnation from Mercedes now boasts touch control buttons, affording drivers greater accessibility and convenience. Additionally, the infotainment system has been bolstered with the latest MBUX software, complete with updated versions of the "Classic," "Discreet," and "Sporty" menu configurations. These customisable settings ensure that drivers can personalise their driving experience according to their unique preferences, whether they desire a more traditional interface or a more dynamic, sporty one.
Powertrains
The GLA has undergone a major upgrade with the MFA2 platform, which enables it to incorporate electrification features in its revamped engine range. All engines are paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The petrol options start with the GLA 180, which retains the 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine from the previous model. However, it now comes with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that boosts the power by 13bhp for short periods and allows the engine to switch off when coasting. The 180 delivers 134bhp, while the 200 has the same engine and hybrid system but produces 161bhp.
It's fascinating to note that the GLA comes in two '4MATIC' variants that feature Mercedes' innovative four-wheel drive system. This state-of-the-art system enhances the vehicle's traction and stability, ensuring a smooth, effortless driving experience. These variants are none other than the GLA 220 and 250, both of which pack a mighty punch with their turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines.
The GLA 220 produces an output of 188bhp and 300Nm of torque, making it a formidable force on the roads. Meanwhile, the GLA 250 offers an impressive 221bhp and 350Nm of torque, providing drivers with a hair-raising, adrenaline-pumping experience that excites them.
Diesel aficionados are not left out, as the GLA offers an array of options that boast the same mild-hybrid system as their petrol counterparts. These diesel models also feature a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, with power ranging from 114bhp in the 180d to a mighty 188bhp in the 220d 4MATIC, ensuring that there is something for everyone in the GLA range.

Within the latest iteration of the GLA, the acclaimed 250 e model is set to make a comeback. This outstanding PHEV marvelously combines a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit with an 11.5 kWh battery pack. The new battery, unlike its predecessor, is slightly larger and promises a soaring all-electric range of 43 miles. Such an electrifying figure! Yet, the 250 e's total power output remains the same as before, namely 215bhp, along with a monstrous 450Nm of torque. It is worth mentioning that the charging mechanism of the plug-in hybrid variant is left unchanged, allowing for a charging speed of up to 11kW.
Price
As the curtain falls on the outgoing Mercedes GLA, the automaker has given no indication of the new model's pricing. The current entry-level 200 Sport Executive starts at £37,645, but speculation suggests that the facelifted model's cost may exceed £40k due to the brand's pursuit of premiumization. Customers can expect to get more features as standard in the new version, but only time will tell if the price increase will be a burden on wallets.
