Grey Reaffirms Its Position As UK’s Most Popular New Car Colour
When it comes to motorists’ favourite new car shade in the UK, ‘Grey’ topped the list in 2021 again, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Thanks to the grey’s shiny appeal, it enjoys better resale value. Out of all the new car registrations in 2021, 24.8 per cent of vehicles were sporting the grey shade.
This rating is better than a year before that witnessed a 24.4 per cent market share for grey.
The two other most popular shades among new car buyers were also monochrome, with black in the second spot (20.5 per cent) next to white in the third (17.2 per cent).
It means over three out of five (62.4 per cent) brand-new vehicles hitting the UK roads in 2021 were either grey, black or white.
There are a number of reasons why car buyers prefer ‘grey’ over other shades, SMMT went into details of that.
The industry body said, “It can be a sleek and deeper tone than other shades, is well suited to black trims and darker wheels, and offers an attractive compromise between the also-popular black and white.”
Grey seems like a ‘potentially safer choice’ since it presents ‘wider resale appeal than brightly coloured cars,' the SMMT affirms.
Blue is another shade that topped the list of most famous colours after black and white last year with a 17 per cent market share.
Other shades with more than one per cent of market stake included red (8.8 per cent), silver (6.8 per cent), and green (1.1 per cent).
Besides these, we witnessed a rising demand for gold, yellow and turquoise, even though all of them combined just represent 0.9 per cent of brand-new vehicles.
Among the most peculiar shades, pink was the colour that received the most attention in Bedfordshire county with 66 registrations in 2021.
The UK observed a lower number of new car registrations last year due to diminishing supply, attributed to semiconductor shortage and impact of Covid-19 pandemic. The SMMT reported 1.6 million new automobile registrations in 2021.
That signified a one per cent rise in 2020 but was 28.7 per cent lower than the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
The SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes cited: “2021 was anything but normal, but British drivers stuck to their familiar favourites of grey, black and white cars.”
“But while last year's new cars might share the same shades as previous years, under the bonnet, there has been a real shift, with one in six buyers choosing to go green.”
“With car registrations still low compared to pre-pandemic, helping even more drivers move to greener cars – whatever the actual colour – has never been more important.”
“Incentives are helping move the market and should continue, but the speed of this shift to electric must be matched by an acceleration in the pace of charging infrastructure investment.”
“Drivers should expect to be able to recharge irrespective of wherever they live, work or visit.”
