Hyundai Ioniq 5 Won 2022 World Car of The Year Title Along With Two Other Honours
Hyundai’s popular Ioniq 5 EV received three medals at the World Car of the Year Awards 2022.
The automotive world has chosen its best vehicle for 2022! The new Ioniq 5 EV has garnered the overall World Car of the Year honour along with World Electric Vehicle and World Car Design gongs.
The jury consisted of over 100 automotive reporters from 33 nations whose job was to test 28 cars and report their findings. Out of these 28, the jury finalised three cars - the Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-e, and the Kia EV6.
A secret poll was organised to pick one winner, which was revealed at the New York International Auto Show last month.
Jaehoon Chang, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, stated, “We are truly honoured to receive these prestigious awards, which recognise the talent and hard work of all our people and business partners at Hyundai Motor Company.”
“Our game-changing EV has made a strong impact on increasingly eco-conscious and demanding consumers around the world, and its success supports the acceleration of electrification of the automotive industry.”
The brands will now use the World Car of the Year accolades in their promotional and marketing material to attract customers and improve
sales.
After being placed second last year, the Ioniq 5 has finally won the World Car of The Year Award. Since its launch, the South Korean EV has been in the news for its modern design, advanced tech, and healthy drive range.
Hyundai offers it with 58kWh and 73kWh battery packs. However, the latter will soon be switched with a 77kWh pack. One of its biggest highlights is its fast charging capability. Using a 220kW capable charger, the EV juices up 62 miles in only five minutes and can cover a maximum of 300 miles on a full charge.
For a car to take part in the World Car of the Year award, it must have at least 10,000 sales under its name, wearing a price tag lower than luxury vehicles, and should have been sold in at least two big markets on two different continents.

Besides Hyundai’s EV, two other electric vehicles also won accolades at the event. The Audi e-Tron GT received the World Performance Car of the Year award, while the Mercedes Benz EQS garnered the World Luxury Car honour.
Furthermore, the Toyota Yaris Cross was named the World Urban Car of the Year, and Luc Donckerwolke, the CCO of Hyundai, received the World Car Person of the Year medal.
