Mercedes Unveils 2023 E-Class To Compete With BMW 5 Series

The advent of the sixth-generation Mercedes E-Class has brought a slew of noteworthy enhancements to the executive saloon, poised to challenge the latest iteration of its BMW 5 Series counterpart in the fiercely competitive automotive landscape. Notably, each and every available powertrain in the cutting-edge E-Class has undergone electrification, following in the footsteps of its facelifted GLE SUV counterpart. However, unlike the eagerly anticipated 5 Series, the E-Class lacks an all-electric variant. That said, such an alternative is more than ably provided by the comparably sized EQE model.

2023 Mercedes E-Class Preview

Exterior

The design represents a marked evolutionary step forward compared to its predecessor. It integrates various styling elements derived from the S-Class and EQE models, incorporating a brand-new grille that is not only aesthetically pleasing but can also be backlit as an optional extra. The slim, sleek LED headlights and tail lights, the latter featuring a unique and distinctive three-pointed star signature, are among the most noticeable design features of the new E-Class.

Interior

In terms of size, the latest E-Class has experienced a substantial growth spurt in every direction, which has resulted in an enhanced and more roomy interior. Furthermore, the boot capacity has been generously maintained at 540 litres for combustion-powered models. In contrast, for the PHEVs, it remains at 370 litres, a minor capacity reduction justified by the vehicle's increased environmentally conscious functionality.

Driving Dynamics

With a drag coefficient of 0.23Cd, the efficiency of the latest E-Class is bound to receive a remarkable boost. The aerodynamic optimisation of the car's wheels, available between 17 and 21 inches, will provide an additional lift to the vehicle's performance. Furthermore, the new model comes equipped with many impressive features aimed at reducing drag, such as flush-fitting door handles and an active radiator grille, which is capable of curtailing drag when cooling requirements are reduced.

Technology

The E-Class car's reputation as a luxury-focused option in the executive sector is further fortified by its adoption of cutting-edge technology inspired by its larger counterpart, the S-Class. Notably, the optional 'Superscreen' dash on the E-Class marks a significant development. This particular feature is essentially a downscaled rendition of the Hyperscreen, which was previously showcased in both the EQS and S-Class models. In addition, the Superscreen utilizes the latest MBUX infotainment system. Its design mimics that of its larger counterpart, with a massive central display, alongside two flanking panels that cater to each front occupant.

The latest iteration of the E-Class sedan boasts an array of advanced safety systems featuring active blind-spot detection and brake assist technology. Additionally, the 2023 E-Class now offers the convenience of automated valet parking, streamlining the parking process for discerning drivers.

Powertrains

In terms of powertrains, the new E-Class offers an impressive selection of options, including both mild-hybrid and plug-in power systems. Each model is equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The mild hybrid lineup starts with the E 200, delivering 201bhp through a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine for those seeking a more eco-conscious option. A 23bhp electric motor further boosts this powertrain.

The formidable force of diesel power is harnessed within the 194bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder E 220 d mild hybrid that boasts a fuel economy rating of 58.9mpg. Buyers may obtain this with either rear-wheel propulsion or 4MATIC all-wheel propulsion.

The E-Class also offers plug-in versions that can traverse up to 73 miles solely on electricity, facilitated by a 25.4kWh battery and an electronic motor, complemented by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol powerplant. Buyers can choose between the E 300 e, with a complete energy production of 312bhp, and the E 400 e, boasting 381bhp. A diesel-powered E 300 de PHEV will be added to the selection in the near future, ready to deliver even more power, performance, and efficiency than ever before.

With its longer wheelbase, the new E-Class surprisingly boasts a turning circle smaller than its predecessor's rather expansive 11.6 metres. However, with the inclusion of the optional Technology package, the rear-axle steering has the capacity to add a remarkable 4.5 degrees of angle, thereby reducing the turning circle to a remarkable 10.8 metres. It is worth noting that the airmatic air suspension with adjustable dampers is an added advantage.

Price

The manufacturer has yet to validate the precise pricing details of the new E-Class vehicle. However, we can expect the saloon version to commence at approximately £50,000 when it becomes available for purchase later this calendar year. Notably, the E-Class Estate model will also be reintroduced to the market, and in the United Kingdom, the range of available models will be exclusively presented in the AMG Line trim option.

If that price is too much to start with, you can have a pre-owned E-Class for over £10K.
