New Driving Rules UK Government Implemented For 2022

6 New Driving Rules UK Government Implemented For 2022

2022 brings stricter laws for UK motorists and automakers to follow, primarily to increase road safety. Below we will discuss six new driving rules for 2022.

Compulsory speed limiters for brand-new vehicles

All brand-new vehicles should have speed limiters installed from 6th July 2022 forwards for enhanced road safety. The European Commission in the General Safety Regulation suggested this decree earlier, and the European Parliament sanctioned it in 2019. The United Kingdom will follow suit regardless of Brexit because it agreed to keep most European rules regarding new vehicles. It will aid in regulating the auto development procedures across Europe.

Newly constructed buildings in England to have mandatory fixed EV chargers

The new UK law requires all newly built properties in England to fix an EV charging point this year. It includes all new houses and non-inhabited properties like supermarkets and offices, in addition to significantly mended structures with over ten parking sites.

This new rule will not only aid in enhancing the number of EV chargers in the country but will also persuade more and more residents to opt for electric vehicles before the government disallows sales of diesel and petrol vehicles in 2030.

Tougher rules for mobile phone usage during driving

Although the regulation prevents us from calling or messaging while driving, the government has imposed severer by-laws from 2022. The new rules forbid drivers to take pictures and videos, pick a song from the playlist, and play video games during driving. You cannot do any of these actions in red light, as well.

Those who fail to abide by these rules will receive a £200 fine and six points on their licence. On the other hand, you can interact with your smartphone for taking directions, given that the phone sits in a cradle.

Most businesses cannot use red diesel and biofuels

The majority of corporations will not be able to use discounted red diesel and biofuels from 1st April 2022 forwards. Instead, they have to resort to taxed white diesel. This act will support the usage of more ecological fuels and inspire energy-efficient methods to perform trading.

Only the agriculture, horticulture, fish farming, forestry, rail, and non-commercial heating system businesses can use the discounted red diesel.

New Clean Air Zones For Manchester and Bradford

Greater Manchester has also described its Clean Air Zone (CAZ) encompassing areas like Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan. From 30th May 2022 ahead, these places will require polluting cars to pay as they enter the Clean Air Zone.

Furthermore, Bradford Clean Air Zone, including the Bradford external ring road and stretching out by the Aire valley passage, which encompasses Manningham Lane/Bradford Road and Canal Road site, will also charge polluting vehicles. The county didn’t mention the applicable date yet.

Modifications to the Highway Code

The government has changed the Highway Code to step up the security measures for most susceptible road users like cyclists and walkers, who can easily sustain injuries in a mishap. The modifications have already been imposed from 29th January 2022. The authorities have launched three rules, namely H1, H2, and H3.

The H1 rule is made to improve the safety of walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. The H2 demands motorists to pull the brakes when they see walkers crossing or waiting to cross the path on junctions, zebra crossing, and parallel crossing. The H3 requires motorists not to cut cyclists, horse riders, or horse-drawn vehicles riding in front when driving into or out of an intersection.
