New Mercedes CLE: C-Class & E-Class Coupe Substitute

The CLE is a fresh addition to the Mercedes lineup, promising a combination of the most appealing features from the previous C-Class and E-Class coupes, all in a single offering.

Mercedes faces a dual challenge as it navigates the electric vehicle territory with its lineup of all-electric EQ models while also maintaining its presence in the realm of traditional internal-combustion engine cars. A new addition to their lineup, the Mercedes CLE, aims to streamline their offerings by replacing the two-door variants of both the C-Class and E-Class models.

Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a convertible version of the CLE in the upcoming months. However, they initially chose to unveil the new model as a coupe, presenting a fresh competitor to the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5. Based on earlier sightings of disguised prototypes, we anticipate that Mercedes' high-performance AMG division will also introduce a performance-oriented variant of the CLE later this year.

2024 Mercedes CLE Overview

Exterior design

The CLE is strategically positioned between the C-Class and E-Class, as Mercedes aims to combine the finest attributes of both models. Although it boasts a length greater than that of the previous E-Class Coupe, its width remains unchanged, while the lowered positioning contributes to a more streamlined and elegant appearance.

The design of the CLE's front end resembles the C-Class rather than drawing inspiration from the new EQE-inspired E-Class. It features LED headlights and incorporates Mercedes' Panamerica grille, along with noticeable bonnet bulges. The side displays a minimalist design with smooth surfaces, while the rear showcases a rear light design reminiscent of the new GLC Coupe. Additionally, sporty elements, such as faux twin exhaust tips, a diffuser, and rear air vents, add to its overall aesthetic.

Interior and technology

When you step into the CLE, you'll quickly spot numerous design elements and technological features borrowed from the C-Class and GLC. A generously sized 12.3-inch central touchscreen and an 11.9-inch driver's display come equipped with the latest MBUX infotainment system. This system incorporates Mercedes' innovative routines function, which intelligently adapts to the driver's behaviour. It can autonomously activate the climate control, adjust the ambient lighting, and conveniently remind you of important occasions like birthdays or phone calls, all based on your previous interactions.

Mercedes recently introduced an innovative voice recognition system that debuted in the E-Class. This advanced technology eliminates the need for the traditional "Hey Mercedes" wake-up phrase. When the driver is the vehicle's sole occupant, they can activate the voice control feature by simply interacting with a red microphone symbol displayed on the driver's cluster.

Owners will receive convenient updates wirelessly throughout CLE's lifespan. In select regions, the car will even provide 5G internet connectivity. Moreover, the central screen presents a range of exciting additions, such as TikTok, the Vivaldi web browser, and the popular Angry Birds game.

Mercedes has ensured that their vehicles come with extensive safety features as part of the standard package. These include attention assist, active brake assist, lane keeping, speed limit warning, and a reversing camera. To enhance safety even further, customers can opt for the 'Advanced Plus' package, which includes blind spot assist and traffic sign recognition.

Considering that the wheelbase is 8mm less compared to the E-Class Coupe, the interior of the CLE is marginally more compact. The rear seating area offers reduced legroom and headroom, and the trunk capacity is 5 litres smaller than the E-Class two-door variant. However, it does provide an additional 60 litres of storage space compared to the previous C-Class Coupe.

Engines and Performance

The CLE is built upon the MRA2 platform, which serves as the foundation for the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, and GLC. Initially, the CLE will provide customers with a choice between diesel and four petrol engines. These engines are all 2.0-litre units equipped with mild-hybrid technology and a nine-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid version will join the lineup at a later stage.

The CLE 220 d's base model offers a power output of 197 brake horsepower (bhp) and 440 Newton-metres (Nm) of torque, enabling it to reach 0-62 miles per hour (mph) in 7.5 seconds. The integrated starter generator remains consistent across all models, providing coasting, slight performance enhancements, and energy recovery features. In the case of this second-generation ISG system, it delivers a power output of 23 bhp and a boosted torque of 200 Nm.

Petrol power starts with the CLE 200 model. It offers a strong output of 204 horsepower and 320 Newton-metres of torque, resulting in a 0.1-second improvement in the 0-62mph acceleration compared to the diesel variant. According to Mercedes, the 200 achieves a fuel efficiency of 44.1 miles per gallon, while the 220 d delivers 60.1mpg. The 200 model can also be equipped with the Mercedes 4MATIC four-wheel drive system, which slightly extends the 0-62mph time by 0.1 seconds and reduces fuel economy to 42.1mpg.

Ascending to the CLE 300 4MATIC, the powertrain delivers 258 horsepower and 400 Newton metres of torque. As a result, the acceleration time to reach 62 miles per hour is 6.2 seconds, with a max velocity electronically limited to 155 miles per hour. The CLE 450 offers even greater speed, boasting 381 horsepower and 500 Newton metres of torque, thanks to improvements in the twin-scroll turbocharger configuration. It achieves the fastest acceleration to 62 miles per hour, clocking in at 4.4 seconds, until the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG variants.

Rear-wheel steering is included in the 'Dynamic Body Control' bundle. This feature allows the 2024 CLE to adjust its rear wheels by a maximum of 2.5 degrees. Additionally, the package includes the option for continuously adjustable damping. By default, the CLE sits 15mm lower than the E-Class model.

Arrival & Price

Mercedes has announced that the CLE coupe will be available for purchase starting in November, while the convertible variant will be released in 2024. The company has not disclosed the pricing details yet, but we anticipate the CLE will have a starting price of approximately £50,000.
