Secondhand Car Auction House BCA To Hold Physical Sale on December 8

BCA, a renowned marketplace for pre-owned vehicles, is set to conduct a test run of an in-person auction—the first one since suspending all physical operations amid the global health crisis.

The auction powerhouse ceased live sales at its UK locations in March 2020, transitioning exclusively to the online platform.

Inside sources reveal that BCA intends to initiate this trial auction on December 8 at its Nottingham auction venue.

The transaction is labeled in-house as ‘experimental,’ and it's anticipated to showcase approximately 500 vehicles.

A dealer, informed of the impending sale, expressed approval of the decision.

‘It's wise to inspect low-priced vehicles in person, as a firsthand assessment is crucial for a thorough evaluation during their passage through the lanes,' remarked the dealer to Car Dealer.

Nevertheless, critics labeled it a reversal of strategy after three years dedicated solely to internet-based transactions of used vehicles.

Car Dealer received verification from BCA regarding the scheduled sale.

An official representative conveyed, 'BCA is organising a festive occasion at our Nottingham facility on December 8.'

Towards the conclusion of 2020, the organisation initiated a substantial overhaul of its operations, leading to workforce reductions at its brick-and-mortar auction locations.

Auction hubs experienced notable cost savings by exclusively conducting auto transactions on the Internet. Nevertheless, they encountered heightened competition in the past few years from establishments like Motorway and Carwow, both engaged in the online auctioning of pre-owned vehicles to dealers.

Car Dealer's April 2021 report indicated that BCA insiders conveyed to dealers that a shift back to in-person sales was improbable.

Nevertheless, rival auction houses were eager to resume operations after the global health crisis. Primary competitor Manheim initiated reopening its facilities in late 2021, starting with a trial involving three locations and later expanding to six.

By September of the same year, all remaining sites were operational again, transitioning to a comprehensive 'hybrid model' encompassing both online and in-person sales. Smaller independent platforms, such as G3 Vehicle Auctions, swiftly recommenced their operations post-pandemic.

During the inauguration of G3's new site in Leeds in 2021, Mike Brewer, host of the Used Car Awards and star of Wheeler Dealers, expressed to Car Dealer that, in his opinion, there was 'nothing superior to attending a physical auction.'
