Study Reveals Car Sellers Prefer Dealers Over Online Buying Sites

Recent statistics indicate that a majority of individuals who possess automobiles prefer to engage in trade-ins with dealerships rather than opting for online car purchasing platforms.

Recently, Swansway joined the ranks of companies providing their own web-based car purchasing platform by introducing their latest venture called the 'Sell 2 Swansway' website.

Nonetheless, findings from research conducted by eBay Motors Group indicate that customers might still lean towards traditional transaction methods.

Recent findings from the group's most recent Consumer Insight Panel reveal that a significant majority of individuals (62%) actively looking to purchase have expressed their intention to trade in their current vehicle at a dealership to offset the cost of their upcoming acquisition.

The latest study found an additional 38% of the 2,000 participants expressed their intention to sell their current vehicle prior to making a purchase through a dealership.

Moreover, the research indicated that a majority of vehicle owners still consider dealerships as their preferred choice for online assessments of their vehicles' value.

According to a recent survey, approximately 32% of respondents expressed their intention to obtain an internet-based price quote from the dealership they plan to make a purchase. In contrast, 22% indicated a higher preference for receiving online assessments and offers from car search platforms when engaging with dealers.

Approximately 21% of respondents expressed a preference for engaging in direct conversations with the seller when discussing the possibility of trading in their current vehicle, as opposed to relying on online assessments for valuation.

Furthermore, private sales (28%) were slightly more popular than online car purchasing platforms like We Buy Any Car (27%) among those considering alternatives to dealer trade-ins.

For purchasers opting to trade in with retailers, convenience remains the primary overarching factor, with survey participants expressing their appreciation for the simplicity of accomplishing all tasks in a single location.

For individuals selling their existing automobile before acquiring a substitute, the primary catalyst resided in obtaining an increased value, followed by assuming authority over the procedure and expanding the available alternatives.

Lucy Tugby, the marketing director at eBay Motors Group, responded to these findings, stating that despite the presence of numerous well-known online car-buying services, dealerships remain the preferred choice for most buyers when it comes to trade-ins. Whether obtaining online valuations or engaging in negotiations at the physical showroom, dealerships remain the go-to destination.

"This is positive information for dealers, who must continue to put in efforts to maintain this customer base and prevent specialized online platforms for used car purchases from overtaking them.

Given the current scarcity of pre-owned vehicles, a dealer's skill in selling trade-ins holds heightened significance."

“Our findings divulge there is a significant appeal for customers to engage in simultaneous trading and purchasing. A majority (57%) of buyers indicate that they obtain online valuations in some form.

Ensuring competitiveness in valuations continues to be of utmost importance.”
