Top-selling Vehicles in the UK for 2024 Will the Ford Puma Maintain Its Lead?

The previous year marked a favourable period for the automotive sector, witnessing the UK's most successful car sales since the pandemic.
Over 1.9 million brand-new vehicles were registered, but one car stood out above the others. The Ford Puma emerged as the UK's top-selling car in 2023, marking the first time a Ford has led the market since the Ford Fiesta's 12-year dominance concluded in 2020.

It faced tough competition from the Nissan Qashqai, Vauxhall Corsa, and Volkswagen T-Roc to secure its position at the peak.

Nonetheless, the industry appears poised for heightened competition in 2024.

Which vehicles have dominated UK sales this year? Check out the top 10 list below, covering January to date, sourced from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders:

Top-selling cars in the UK in 2024 to date
1. Ford Puma – 19,393 units

The Ford Puma, last year's top seller, maintains its momentum in 2024. Its enjoyable driving experience, appealing price, and the addition of a sporty ST model continue to impress. While not the familiar Fiesta, it offers a worthy alternative. Surpassing sales of the Transit and Transit Custom vans is noteworthy.

2. Nissan Qashqai – 17,050 units

The top-selling Nissan Qashqai slipped to second place last year, yet it remains competitive against the Puma and the Kia Sportage in 2024. The British-made crossover's popularity endures, credited to its exceptional practicality, further enhanced by the introduction of electrified powertrains in its latest iteration.

3. Kia Sportage - 15,824 units

The Kia Sportage performed well in 2023, ranking fourth in UK sales. Its strong performance has continued into 2024, maintaining a top position. This crossover has consistently impressed since its fifth-generation debut in late 2022, boasting a stylish design, modern powertrains, and excellent value.

4. Audi A3 - 13,503 units

Among the vehicles listed, the Audi A3 stands out as the sole non-SUV option, maintaining its popularity over its Volkswagen Golf counterpart, as observed in 2023. It rightfully earns its place in the top 10 with its comfortable ride, excellent body control, and spacious, luxurious interior. Moreover, its comparatively lower price compared to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class further strengthens its appeal.

6. Volkswagen Golf - 12,651 units

The Volkswagen Golf has seen a dip in popularity, yet remains a favoured choice for families seeking a versatile hatchback. The BMW 1 Series has been available in its present version since 2019, yet it remains a favorite for buyers seeking an elegant hatchback with a stylish interior and efficient engines.
