Toyota Unveils GR H2 Racing Concept: Hydrogen Hypercar for Circuit Racing

Toyota eagerly anticipates a forthcoming era of hydrogen endurance racers, unveiling the GR H2 concept vehicle.

Toyota GR recently unveiled the GR H2 Racing Concept, a hydrogen-powered endurance racer. This impressive race car was introduced in anticipation of the upcoming 2023 Le Mans 24h race.

The unveiling of this concept follows the Automobile Club de l'Ouest's (ACO) announcement, stating their decision to include hydrogen-powered and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles in the FIA World Endurance Championship starting in 2026.

The Toyota GR H2’s design is clearly influenced by the acclaimed TS050 and GR010 race cars that achieved victory at Le Mans. It showcases a wide range of aerodynamic enhancements beneath its body, while the cockpit appears noticeably more compact.

Toyota has not yet disclosed specific information about the GR H2's powertrain. However, we anticipate that by 2026, its hydrogen-based propulsion system will possess sufficient capabilities to conquer the most demanding endurance circuits around the globe.

Toyota has made a meaningful impact in the racing world by successfully implementing hydrogen fuel technology in their Corolla for Japan's Super Taikyu Series. They have further demonstrated their prowess in this field by participating in an endurance race held in Thailand.

Toyota has been at the forefront of utilising hydrogen fuel in road cars, exemplified by models like the Mirai. Interestingly, while the company has shown reluctance towards complete electrification, they have continued to pioneer hydrogen technology. The GR H2, on the other hand, would mark a groundbreaking milestone as it introduces this technology to a widely celebrated global motorsport event.

Toyota states they have expressed interest in creating "high-performance vehicles with a racing heritage" while simultaneously striving to support a "carbon-neutral environment." It implies that the GR H2 might serve as their endeavour to promote a more eco-friendly approach to motorsports. In the long run, this advanced technology may potentially find its way into upcoming ventures involving road vehicles.

Toyota's racing division has a rich history in endurance racing, securing victory at Le Mans on multiple occasions since 2018 using their hybrid vehicles. Prior to the hybrid era, Toyota engaged in fierce competition against formidable rivals such as Porsche and Jaguar during the Group C era. In 1990, their 90C-V car impressively finished sixth, and they continued to secure podium finishes throughout the 1990s. However, Toyota faced notable challenges in claiming an overall victory until their triumphant achievement in 2018.

The GR H2 will be showcased for all the attendees of Le Mans 2023 to admire. You can catch a glimpse of it at the H2 village organised by the ACO, situated at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
