UK-Built Nissan Leaf Poised for New EV Grant Success
Nissan’s big boss says their new Leaf, made in Sunderland, is super ready to grab the full £3,750 from the UK’s Electric Car Grant (ECG). The government set up this £650m fund to make electric cars cheaper, giving up to £3,750 off new ones. It’s part of the UK’s Plan for Change, pushing for greener cars that don’t pollute and save people cash.
You don’t need to fill out extra forms—buyers get the discount right at the dealership for electric cars priced below £37,000. Manufacturers are waiting for the green light, so expect discounted electric rides in showrooms soon. That £650m could cover around 173,000 cars at the max discount, about half of last year’s EV sales in the UK.
The ECG keeps going until the 2028/29 financial year, letting tons of drivers score cheaper electric cars. Only brands serious about cutting emissions with a Science-Based Target (SBT) and real progress qualify. Nearly 50 new electric car models should make the cut, with more probably joining soon.
There’re two discount levels: the greenest cars snag £3,750 off, but less eco-friendly ones still get £1,500. Transport secretary Heidi Alexander just shared the first approved models. Six Citroen EVs—like the e-C3, e-C4, and e-Berlingo—qualify for a £1,500 discount through this program.
