UK Road Upgrades Get Huge Boost
Big news dropped on July 8 about UK roads getting a major glow-up. The government’s throwing £92 billion at 50 road and rail projects, all set to roll out over the next five years. Jobs? Yes, 42,000 of them will pop up because of these upgrades.
Plus, they’re planning to build 39,000 new homes while fixing up the roads. Five huge road projects got the spotlight: the M60/M62/M66 in Greater Manchester, a link road from M54 to M6 in Staffordshire, the A38 Derby Junction in Derbyshire, the A46 Newark Bypass in Nottinghamshire, and the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine road.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander was hyped about the plans. She said this £92 billion cash splash, especially for northern and Midlands cities, will spark jobs and growth fast. It’s all part of a big push to connect towns and help build 1.5 million homes, which they’re calling the “Plan for Change.”
The M60, M62, and M66 upgrades focus on fixing the messy Simister Island junction, but planners still need to give it the green light. Over in Staffordshire, a brand-new dual carriageway will link M54 junction 1 to M6 junction 11, and it might cost £200 million.
Then there’s the A46 Newark Bypass, where they’re swapping four miles of single road for a dual carriageway between Farndon and Winthorpe roundabouts. That one’s still waiting for approval too. The A38 Derby Junction project, costing £250 million, will ditch three roundabouts for slick interchanges.
Meanwhile, the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine road’s getting a £1.3 billion makeover, turning a single carriageway into a dual one from M6 junction 40 to A1(M) junction 53, with extra fixes at Penrith and Scotch Corner junctions.
Not everyone’s happy, though. Folks hoping for upgrades to the A12 from Chelmsford to A120 or the A47 from Wansford to Sutton are out of luck—those projects got scrapped. Earlier this year, the government promised £24 billion to keep UK’s major roads in shape, which breaks down to about £8 billion a year. All these changes aim to make travel smoother and boost the economy.
