Car of the Month: Audi A1

Pros of the Audi A1

The latest Audi A1 looks amazing and is one of the cheapest Audi models you can buy, making it a great way to get into Audi ownership for less.

Some of the stand-out features of the Audi A1 include the interior, which seriously lives up to what you expect from a premium car brand, and a silent and relaxed ride.

Overview of Audi A1 models

The Audi A1 used to be available in both five and three-door variations. However, the three-door has been discontinued, with the only option left, the five-door Audi A1 Sportback.

There are seven trims in total, though, giving you plenty of options. Here are all the trims available, in order from cheapest to most expensive:

Audi A1 Technik

Includes 15-inch alloys, LED headlights, and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen.

Audi A1 Sport

Includes everything in the Technik trim, in addition to sportier seating and front grille, and an upgrade to 16-inch alloys.

Audi A1 S Line

With this trim, you get 17-inch alloys and a more muscular body style than the Sport trim. You also get lowered sports suspension and ‘S’ embossed upholstery.

Audi A1 S Line Competition

The Competition version of the S Line trim gives the A1 more of a hot hatch appearance by adding even lower suspension and adjustable dampers. Red brake callipers are also fitted, as well as smarter-looking exhaust pipes.

S Line Style Edition

The Style Edition S Line trim adds exclusive paint choices, a leather interior, and LED ambient lighting. As well as that, you get 18-inch ‘5-Spoke Y’ alloy wheels.

S Line Contrast Edition

The last of the S Line trim, this one comes with front sport seats in Alcantara, 18-inch ‘7-Spoke Rotor’ alloy wheels, as well as darkened LED headlights.

Black Edition

The Black edition includes 18” Anthracite gloss, black alloy wheels, privacy glass, and black styling touches to the exterior, giving the car an enhanced and unique styling.

Vorsprung

Vorsprung is top of the range and features Audi’s virtual cockpit, 18-inch ‘5-Double-Arm’ alloy wheels, and heated front sports seats.

Performance

The Audi A1 is either available as a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic, with only petrol engines available.

The base engine available on the Audi A1 is a 1 litre 25 TFSI 94bhp which reached 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds, making it one of the most laborious engines in the range.

Opt for the 1 litre 30 TFSI with 108bhp, and you’ll get more power, with it reaching 0-62mph in around 9 seconds.

The 1.5 litres 35 TFSI with 148bhp is more powerful still, achieves 0-62mph in around 7 seconds, and get 44 mpg. This option is the best to go with if you’re looking for speed without compromising on efficiency.

The Technik and Sport trim levels do a better job of remaining composed and comfortable around town due to the smaller alloys, whereas the trim levels with larger alloys remain very controlled and smooth on the motorway.

The A1 generally feels very grown up to drive, similar to a Volkswagen Polo. But if you’re looking for something more thrilling and sportier to drive, we’d opt for the Ford Fiesta or even the MINI.
