
Top 200 UK Dealers See Used Car Sales Stall - Here's Why
According to information from our data partners CarCondor, the consortium disposed of 174,174 pre-owned vehicles in April, marking a decrease of 5.73% from March, which had experienced a 2.01% increase from February. These transactions generated £3.55bn in revenue, reflecting a 4.78% drop from April.
Additionally, analysis revealed that the volume of newly acquired pre-owned vehicle inventory by the Top 200 dealers totaled 172,016 units, indicating a decline of 13.4% compared to March.
This data could suggest challenges faced by major dealer conglomerates and pre-owned car businesses in replenishing their inventories. Across all dealer categories, declines were observed in April, with supermarkets experiencing the most significant decrease of 14.49%.
Dealers with inventory ranging from 1,000 to 4,999 experienced a marginal increase of +0.08%. Apart from this, all other dealers (0-499, 500-999, and 5000+) witnessed declines ranging from 4.69% to 14.17%.
In April, dealers with 10-99 locations observed a sales uptick of 0.44%, whereas others (Single location dealers, 2-9 locations, and 100+ locations) faced a decrease in used car sales ranging from 4.02% to 12.17%.
Arnold Clark maintained its position as the most stocked dealer in the Top 200 list, boasting an average inventory of 19,156 cars in April. Evans Halshaw followed closely behind with 8,063 cars, while Constellation-owned Marshall Motor Group surpassed Sytner to claim third place with 7,316 cars in stock.
The Skoda Karoq emerged as the fastest-selling used car among the Top 200 dealers, while the perennial favourite Ford Fiesta remained the top-seller.
